Pak-China Border At Khunjerab Will Reopen On April 1st for trade and traffic on April 1st, 2019. According to a Gilgit-Baltistan Home Department notification, the border crossing will remain open until 30 November 2019.

During the severe winters, the border crossing is closed because the area, located 15,000 ft above sea level, gets several feet of snow.

The Pak-China border At the border crossing in Khunjerab is the only current road connection between Pakistan and China. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is a critical part.

Khunjerab Pass is a high mountain pass in the Karakorum Mountains in a strategic position on Pakistan’s northern border (Gilgit-Baltistan) and on China’s southwestern border (Xinjiang)

In 1966 the choice of Khunjerab Pass to Karakorum Highway was decided. The Khunjerab Pass is the world’s highest international paved border crossing and the highest point on the Karakorum Highway.

The long Pak-China border At Khunjerab pass is often covered with snow during the winter season and is therefore generally closed for heavy vehicles from 30 November to 1 May and for all vehicles from 30 December to 1 April.

It is important to note that Gilgit-Baltistan permanent residents may travel to Xinjiang without obtaining Visa. They just need a border pass, issued by Gilgit-Baltistan Home Department.
